This week has been National Recycling Week, and to mark the occasion we have a selection of our top tips and ideas to help recycle and reuse items as well as a few ways you can reduce your use of single use plastic.

Tip #1

Rather than pouring it down the drain, recycle any left-over water you have in your kettle or unwanted water you have remaining after boiling eggs or vegetables. The water can be used to water house plants or garden plants, and if its vegetable water it will actually be packed with nutrients that plants love.

Tip #2

Have you got a nice teacup, mug, bowl or even teapot that is chipped and now unusable? Don’t throw it away, repurpose it by using it as a quaint and quirky plant pot. They look adorable on any window sill, shelf or in the garden.

Tip #3

When you are on the go take a travel mug or refillable water bottle with you. Not only will it save you from spending out so much money on buying overpriced drinks when you are out, it will also reduce your single use plastic usage by avoiding drinks in disposable bottles and cups. It’s worth remembering that although a lot of disposable tea and coffee cups claim to be compostable, they are only able to be composted in an industrial composter and take a long time to break down.

Tip #4

Rather than buying new bottles of products such as body wash, shampoo and washing up detergent, why not visit your local ecover refill station with your empties and get them refilled. They have them all over the country, and you can use this handy link to locate the one closest to your address.

Tip #5

Have you got some worn out clothes lying around that are too tired to be recycled or taken to the charity shop? Don’t just throw them away, cut them up and use them as cloths or dusters for cleaning and polishing around the house, or even for cleaning the car.

It’s so easy to just throw items away once you are finished with them, but by reusing them as much as you can and recycling them wherever possible it reduces the amount of waste that goes into landfill and protects the future of our planet.
